Past Captain’s Corner Entry

Our April dinner meeting was a banner event for Seagull Flight.  For starters, many of us were joined by beautiful women - some spouses and some friends.  Their presence truly improved the quality of the conversation and the scenery compared to our typical meetings!  Thanks to all the ladies that joined us.

We also had the pleasure of hosting seven of the sharpest JROTC students from the high schools that Seagull Flight supports.  These students were accompanied by their instructors and some parents for a total of 17 JROTC guests and a total attendance of 94.  Each student accepted Seagull's $400 award for their detachment.  First, they each spent a few minutes telling their personal story of interest in JROTC and plans for the future.  Their stories, interspersed with ambitions and desires, highlighted their exemplary teamwork and service as well as various styles of public speaking (sometimes related to their JROTC detachment service alignment).  Our MC for the presentations, BGen Buhrow, said he would gladly have any of them fly on his wing.  Special thanks to Westy Westenbarger for arranging the JROTC event.

Since April is the birth month of Seagull Flight, we toasted our founder members from 1979.  We recognized 7 WWII veterans and another 7 that served in the Korean War.  I look forward to seeing as many Seagull Flight members as possible at the 5 May Freedom Flight welcome home at the airport - it is sure to be an inspirational time as we recognize those returning from the WWII memorial in Washington DC.

All members of Seagull Flight are requested to appear, in Green Jackets if possible, at the Northwest Florida Regional Airport Terminal Building at 1700 hours, 5 May 2010, for the dedication of an Army UH-1 "Huey" Dustoff Helicopter static display recognizing Army Aviation and Medal of Honor recipient (and Seagull Flight Honorary Flight Captain, deceased), CWO Michael J. Novosel.  Remain after the dedication to welcome home (at 1800) the returning Honor Flight and our WWII vets.
